GLAUCOMA

What is Glaucoma:

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve which is the cable that goes from the back of your eye to your brain. Glaucoma is a slow and silent disease that can and causes blindness if untreated. Treatment is centered on lowering the eye pressure. It does not cause any symptoms and therefore screening is fundamental. There are many kinds of glaucoma and many subtleties involved in the diagnosis of glaucoma. A thorough exam and evaluation will uncover these subtleties and guide the best treatment for a given patient.

What is a glaucoma evaluation:

At Larissa Camejo MD.PA. Center for Medical and Surgical Eye Care, a glaucoma evaluation involves a careful interview with the patient, a most thorough eye exam and diagnostic tests such as visual field and OCT and fundus photo among others. All these tests are done in the office. Once all data is collected Dr. Larissa Camejo discusses findings with patient and reviews treatment options. Dr. Camejo stays up to date on all the medical and surgical treatment modalities and therefore is truly able to tailor the treatment to each patient’s needs.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery

This is a fairly new field within glaucoma surgery that is composed by ever-growing new surgical options meant to deliver Intraocular pressure lowering while minimizing risks and decreasing recovery time.

There are many options. OMNI surgical device, Xen gel stent implant, Micropulse Laser, Hydrus, Kahook blade and istent are some of the devices Dr. Camejo uses. Not all surgeries are good for every patient. A careful evaluation is needed to decide which would be the best surgical approach for a given patient.

Traditional Glaucoma Surgery

They involve bypassing our normal drainage tissue and creating a “human-made” outflow.

Examples of these surgeries include Trabeculectomy, Express minishunt, Baerveldt Tube and Ahmed valve.
